Where is the Mach Loop in Wales?

The Mach Loop sits within Low Flying Area 7 (LFA7) in mid-Wales, roughly centred on the triangle formed by Dolgellau to the north, Machynlleth to the south, and Dinas Mawddwy to the east. The area falls within Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. The nearest postcode areas are LL40 (Dolgellau side) and SY20 (Machynlleth / Corris side).

It is not a precise circuit with fixed entry and exit points — aircraft enter and exit the low-level system from multiple directions depending on their base and the training profile planned. The valleys most associated with the term "Mach Loop" run roughly north–south between Dolgellau and Corris, with a key east–west corridor through the Bwlch pass on the A470.

How to get to the Mach Loop

The Mach Loop is accessed via the A470 between Dolgellau and Machynlleth, and the A487 between Machynlleth and Dolgellau via the coast. Most visitors approach from one of two directions: the A470 south from Dolgellau (closest to The Bwlch, Cad West, and Cad East), or the A487/A493 north from Machynlleth (closest to Corris and valley-floor locations).

From the north: Dolgellau is reached via the A470 from Blaenau Ffestiniog, or the A494 from Bala. From the south: Machynlleth is on the A489/A487 and has a mainline railway station with connections to Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth. Nearest motorway: M54/A5 at Shrewsbury, approximately 50 miles east. Allow around 90 minutes from Shrewsbury, 3 hours from Birmingham, 3.5–4 hours from London.

Parking is roadside lay-bys at most hilltop locations. There is no dedicated car park for The Bwlch. Corris Craft Centre has free on-site parking. Do not block farm gates or passing places — access to all locations depends on the goodwill of local landowners and farming communities.
